19th Century technique Collotype re-purposed for the 21st Century

Established in 1905, the Benrido Collotype Atelier in Kyoto is one of only two studios in the world that continue to make prints through the Collotype process. Each year Benrido holds the Hariban Award for artists working with monochromatic images, and the winner of the Award is invited to travel to Kyoto for two weeks to collaborate with the master artisans at Benrido and produce exquisite prints from their work.

The winner's final collotype prints are shown in Kyotographie, an international photography exhibition that's gaining a larger audience every year. To ensure that the work can be appreciated beyond the duration of the exhibition, an exquisite limited edition handmade collotype catalog/book is also produced that bountifully showcases the beautiful details of the Collotype.
